Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

ALSO KNOWN AS ABDOMINOPLASTY, A TUMMY TUCK REMOVES EXCESS FAT AND SKIN.

Also known as a tummy tuck, Abdominoplasty removes the excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles to their proper place. This creates an abdominal profile that is sleeker and firmer.

Pregnancy and weight gain can stretch the skin of the abdomen beyond its ability to shrink back. Additionally, the core muscles of the abdomen can become separated during pregnancy and these do not necessarily re-join after giving birth. This results in a bulging tummy and loss of the waistline, and because the skin has lost its elasticity, weight loss and exercise may result in a loose, flabby appearance with multiple stretch marks.

Abdominoplasty surgically removes the excess, loose skin and unwanted fat from the lower abdominal area and repairs or tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. The result is a sleeker profile and a flatter tummy.

Some of the benefits of Abdominoplasty include:

  • Improved appearance;
  • Less abdominal bulging;
  • A more defined waistline;
  • Improved core strength;

This surgical procedure is not a replacement for weight loss but is useful particularly after having children or losing weight. Liposuction is often combined with the procedure to treat residual areas of fat over the hips, flanks and upper abdomen that have been resistant to diet and exercise.

Abdominoplasty leaves a scar that runs from hip bone to hip bone, just above the pubic area that is easily hidden beneath swim and underwear. There is also a scar around the belly button.

In cases of massive weight loss, an extended or “Fleur de Lis” Abdominoplasty may be recommended to remove excess skin in a vertical as well as a horizontal direction.

The best candidates for Abdominoplasty are in good physical condition and have maintained a stable healthy weight. Most patients remain in hospital for 4-7 days following the surgery and will be required to wear a compression garment for three weeks. Complete recovery and return to normal activities can take around 6 weeks.

Abdominoplasty offers great benefits to healthy men and women of all ages and is best suited to those in relatively good shape. To arrange a consultation with one of our surgeons, contact Coastal Plastic Surgery today.
